Hi! Thanks for checking out poliRhetoric.  Simply put, a blog about words.  I’ve always found the topic of words themselves very interesting – how they enter our lexicon, their cultural origins and how they fit into, and shape history.  Considering the buzz that usually surrounds the “Word of the Year” lists, I’m pretty sure I’m not alone.

Since it’s the beginning of the year, it seems like the perfect time to take a look at Merriam-Webster’s “2017 Words of the Year.”  In December, Merriam-Webster published their list based on the top internet searches in 2017.  These types of lists, in particular, capture the zeitgeist of the times, allowing us to not only define our ideas and beliefs, but to place ourselves within the moment in time.  Merriam-Webster’s compilation this year is no different – with words representing the major cultural and political developments of the year:
